You are here because you have decided to bake at home. And this is so exciting to know that you are on your way to lead a better lifestyle. And, if you accidentally have reached to this post, then I recommend you check why is baking healthier and why should you eat more of baked food.

Tools play an important role in Baking. As a beginner, it might be complex for you to know all the essential tools for baking. When I started developing a passion for baking, I was not aware of different baking tools and equipment and their uses. I wish somebody had given me a baking essential checklist and helped me out. Buy basic tools for baking

Never buy a tool because they look fancy. Advertisements and Shopkeepers will make you feel that fancy tools will change your baking forever, but the truth is not the same. Baking does not need most of the fancy tools if you are a hobby baker or home baker. I rely mostly on online shopping which gives me the freedom of choice and an unmatched variety.

But what you really need to buy to start baking. In this article, I will share the must-have and a few goods to have baking tools. Alright, let us solve your problem now.

Must to have basic baking tools

Oven

It is one of the most important baking essentials tools. Make a wise decision of depending on your needs and family size. I recommend buying a little larger than what you think you would need. It becomes useful when you have a guest at home and also when you need to bake that 9” pizza.

PS: if you are still in dilemma then check my article to find which oven is best for you to buy.

Weighing Scale

It is important to be as precise as possible when it comes to measuring the ingredients. A kitchen weighing scale helps you with accurate measurements.

Measuring Cups and Spoons

Many recipes give ingredient measurements in cups and if you are following such recipes then you would need a set of measuring cups and spoons. You may use a conversion table to convert cups into grams and grams into cups but the conversion is not always accurate. It is always advisable to use a set of measuring cups with sturdy handles and easy to read measurements.

Oven Thermometer

Every oven behaves differently. I have two ovens in my kitchen. My 28 liter is generally 20 degrees less to what is on the dial. However, my 52L is 30-40 more than what is on the dial. The inaccurate temperature will either overbake or under bake your dish. You would not prefer to lose your precious ingredients, efforts, and time invested. An oven thermometer can save you from a lot of such problems.

Spatula

Stirring, mixing, scrapping or spreading, spatulas do wonders. I recommend using silicone spatula of 9” to 12” size. They are flexible and can be used at high temperatures.

Whisker

If you are a hobby baker and bakes occasionally then use the regular whisker. But if you are more into whisking cream for cakes etc., then you might like to go for an electric whisker.

Baking Trays

Start with just 2 baking trays in the beginning. The heavier the bottom, the better it is for baking. Heavy bottom allows even distribution of the temperature and hence even baking. You will find a lot of cheaper baking trays with compromised weight and material. I suggest investing in a good and long life tins and trays.

Baking Pans/Tins

Baking pans and tins come in various shapes, sizes, and material. Aluminum, Silicone, Glass, or Non-Stick Cookware, use anything but advisable to use heavy duty pans. For beginners, one circular, one square, and one rectangular shaped pan should be fine. Later on, based upon your requirements, keep on adding.

Cooling Racks

Every baked item needs to cool down on a wired rack. If you don’t let your baked item rest on a wired rack, after they come out of the oven, you will risk them become soggy from inside. Before you make a decision of buying it, check your kitchen again. You might have an alternative already available. If you don’t have one, don’t skip buying this.

Sifter

Sifting aerates the dry ingredients and helps remove unwanted particles. Again, you may already have this, if not, buy a metal sifter.

Brush

Pastry brush or silicon brushes have their own significance. These help you in milk wash, Egg wash, Water wash and applying butter or oil without making any mess. You can use silicon brushes at any temperature hence I recommend using a silicone brush.

Rolling Pin

Indian kitchens are incomplete without a rolling pin. I had to buy a new one because the regular rolling pin I had, was of less width. Your rolling pin should be able to fully cover the width of the dough or icing sheet. This is the only deciding factor in whether to buy a new rolling pin or not. Ideally, a rolling pin should be of about 18” to 24”

Mixing Bowls

They come in different shape, size, color, and material. If you buy plastic mixing bowls ensure that they are of food grade quality. Glass bowls are preferable for them being non-porous and hence they don’t absorb stains. Also, it is easier to see-through for easy monitoring of the ingredient inside the bowl.

Serrated Knife

One you are done with baking, you need to slice your bakes. A serrated knife is what you need to make a perfect slice of your baked items.

Good to Have Baking Tools

Palette Knife

It is a long, thin tool with a round end. You need this for icing the cake, scrapping, leveling and spreading ingredients evenly. If you are the one who likes to eat cake frosted with cream, you will need a palette knife for smoother icing.

Like to see how to use Palette knife, check my video recipe of cake decoration.

Piping Bags

When you think of designing and decorating your cakes and muffins with cream, you will need piping bags to hold the cream together and apply them to the focused area.

Nozzles

While decorating the cake with cream, you would need different nozzles to give different shapes on the cake. There are a wide variety of nozzles available in the market. It is important to invest in nozzles that are not going to rust with time.

TurnTable

While decorating the cake, you need to reach every corner of the cake. It is impossible to keep moving on all sides, however, with turntable, you will be able to move the cake as per your requirement and easily decorate every part of the cake. Some people use the turntable as a prop in their photographs. So depending on your need you may like to invest in a fancy turntable or a simple one.

Parchment Paper

It prevents your baked goodies sticking to the walls or bottom of the pan. Do not confuse butter paper with parchment paper. Lower quality of parchment paper will produce smoke or will get partially burnt in just one bake. The one that I use, last for minimum 3 bakes.

Cling Wrap

To keep your bake items fresh and transportable, you need cling wrap to cover your bakes as well as hold them together. Cling wrap may also be used to cover the dough during the rising process while keeping the visibility clear.

I saw a 60ltrs morphy richards otg on Amazon but didn’t buy that coz of this reasons…
Did I do the right thing by getting 52ltr otg from the shop instead of selecting 60ltr otg online from Amazon?
Should I rely on online shopping for other baking appliance or baking related ingredients?

    • Dear Vaishali,
Thanks much for writing back to me and constantly liking my work. I am humbled.
As far as online shopping is concerned, it is absolutely safe in my experience. I have been buying online for about a decade now. Initially, there were some hiccups but ever since I have started buying from Amazon, it has always been a charm.
I advise you to try online shopping for a product of small amount. Every successful delivery at your end will increase your confidence and gradually you will understand the benefits of buying online like.. better pricing, lots of choices, easy return policies etc..
Let me know if I was able to help you..
      Happy to answer your questions

    • Hello Lakshmi, Thanks a bunch for liking my work. I am humbled by your feedback.
Coming to your question, try the following:
Keep the temperature lower than what is mentioned in the recipe. Also after 10-15 minutes of the bake, when you get the required color, cover your bake with aluminum foil and continue baking further.
      Regards
      Sonia
