Some oven for baking comes with a special grilling accessory which is called Rotisserie. It is a steel base bar that works on motor system to ensure perfect grilling. You must look for Rotisserie if you are going to use oven for baking and grilling and barbecuing vegetables, cottage cheese, and meat.

Ovens have been in existence since ages and as time progressed, electric ovens took over to the traditional brick ovens. The reasons are obvious:

  • They are less expensive
  • Cost of running an electric oven is less than any brick oven
  • Lightweight and easily movable
  • For baked items, OTG does wonder

Few people like to use their microwave convection for baking, and that does the task pretty well too. However, with Microwave Convection, there is always a limitation of the size, mobility, and results.

The types of oven for baking can be distinguished as convection and conventional. The difference between them is that the convection oven has a fan inside to circulate the heat evenly inside the chamber.

Now let’s see who was able to make up to our list of 10 best ovens for baking at home

Note of Caution!

Because every oven is different has the functions and operations differ from brand to brand it is important that you read the instructions manual carefully to get familiar with your oven and its operations. One important you need to watch out for is the variation in the temperature that you set on the dial and the actual temperature inside the oven chamber. Most of the time you will see variation in both of them.

I have a Morphy Richard 28-Litre and it is always 20 °C less inside than the temperature on the dial. Whereas my other OTG which is 52L is mostly 30 °C higher than what it is on the dial.

I would advise you to buy a decent oven temperature to be always aware of the temperature inside the chamber.

I will now share some of the questions that I have generally got from my baking workshop attendees. These questions will help you clear your doubts regarding the usage of OTG.

FAQ’s on using Ovens for Baking

Every recipe calls for preheating of the OTG. Why do we preheat and for how many minutes we need to preheat?

Preheating is done to maintain the OTG temperature from the beginning of the baking. If you do not preheat the oven and put your bake, the baked item will spoil by the time the OTG will come to its required temperature. You always preheat your oven for 10 minutes before you bake and at the same temperature that you will use for baking your recipe.

I have a microwave, can I bake in that?

So if you have microwave convection, yes you can bake. However, there are certain differences in baking in OTG and a Microwave Convection.

  • Size: The maximum size in a Microwave Convection is 32L. This size is ok if you have a small family, but for a large family, baking could be a tedious task.
  • Weight: Microwave Convections are a lot heavier and very difficult to move around.
  • Tin Size: You cannot really bake in square or long tins in a microwave as the glass tray inside the microwave rotates.

Can I bake in a glass bowl in the OTG?

Technically yes. However, if the bowl is made of poor glass quality, it may crack.

Can I bake in silicon tin in the OTG?

Absolutely. You can bake in Aluminum Tins, Dutch oven, Silicon Tins, Non-Stick Trays & Tins, and even in Ceramic pans.

Can we reheat in OTG?

Yes you can. However, the time taken to reheat anything in OTG is going to be higher than reheating it in Microwave.

Can I open the OTG door to check if the baking is proper?

I recommend not to open the OTG for the initial 10 minutes of baking. After that, you may open the door to check the baking. However, every time you open the OTG door, the heat escapes from the oven and frequently opening the door can lead to recipe failure.

And now that you have bought your oven for baking, you will be looking for what to bake in the oven. Here are a few simple recipes for you to start with.

Paneer Kulcha Recipe

Braided Nutella Rolls

Eggless Vanilla Cake

That’s all for now folks. If you have questions regarding using the OTG oven for baking, leave a comment below and I will address them personally.

Well if you are into orders then I would recommend you to buy a new oven a capacity of at least 60-liter.

Can you recommend what is the smallest OTG size that can fit 8” cake pan? How many litre oven should I look at? Appreciate it. Thanks.

    • You can buy a 16-liter oven as well to start with but my recommendations are always to have a minimum 28-liter oven to get good results.

  • hii mam I have Reliance OTG But there is a single road without fan But the double road and fan plz help me which mode i have use

    • Type of recipe has nothing to do with the brand and make. You know the family size, you need to decide on the quantity and frequency in which you will be baking and then finalize the one that we have recommended in the list. It should be easy.
      Thanks
      Sonia

I love baking and would like to take this seriously. I have been trying to bake bread but eveytime it goes hard on the crust or by dinner rolls burn when I use a microwave but I get good results when I use a pressure cooker. Could this be because am using the wrong oven? What should I buy if I am looking at doing home baking for business

  • Hi Sonia

We have been using a gas oven for the past 25 years, but would like to switch to an electric OTG oven now.

Could you please suggest what would be the Ideal oven to buy keeping in mind the below points:
    1. For a family of 5
    2. To bake various varieties of pies, cakes and breads (including cookies)
    3. To bake Italian recipes such as Pizzas and other baked items
4.To bake a full roast chicken or duck

I know you have suggested various options, but still if you could suggest an apt OTG oven for these requirements, it would be really helpful for us.

Thanks a lot in advance for the reply and also for all the courses and your good work you have shared with us.

    Regards, Jefferson

  • Hi Sonia,
    Very informative article.
Can you help me with setting of preheating morphy Richard’s oven

    Thanks
    Swathi

    • Swathi,

For preheating, just switch on your oven will all the required setting mentioned as per recipe for 10-15 min prior to bake anything.

      Happy Baking!
      Sonia

  • Hi,
I am looking to buy an OTG, I am fond of baking cookies ,cakes, pizza
I am really confused, can you suggest an OTG that is good for this purpose.
I have tried to shortlist to following models –
    Bajaj 2200 TMSS 22 L
    Morphy Richards 28 RSS 28 L
Morphy Richards OTG Besta 52 L

I understand there is a significant capacity difference in terms of Liters, however since baking is my hobby I am more concerned with features & best fit for things I mentioned above.

Looking forward to hear back from you.

Thanks for this wonderful blog which helps baking enthusiasts like me a lot.

    Anu.

  • Hi Sonia, I want to buy OTG for baking for home as well in future for professional orders. Is the convection function useful for reducing electricity consumption? I have to choose between Bajaj 45 L or Murphy Richard 40 L. Please help me choose

    • Hello Sushma,
How much you are going to back. If you are going to bake full day, back to back, you concern about electricity consumption is valid and then you must go for commercial ovens, however, if you are going to be just a regular baker, baking about 20 minutes a day, you will not have any noticeable difference in the electricity bill.
Technically, convection should help you reduce electricity bills.
Morphy and Bajaj are now handled by the same company at the backend so service wise there is no difference. However, if the prices are similar for both, I would go with the bigger size available.
      Thanks
      Sonia

  • Very informative article. After reading this I feel I should go for an org .
    I have two questions :
    1. I am confused about using the different racks – low, middle, bottom – like how to use the diff racks and what difference it make. I fear I may burn my cookies

    2. I was told that the body of the Morphy Richards otg gets heated up fast. Is it true? Does it harm ?

If you could help me understand the above, it will be of great help for me to decide on my new OTG
    Thank you

    • Hello Jenica,
      Thanks for liking the article.
OTG is the way to go if you are going to bake regularly.

      1. As a general rule, always use middle rack.

      2. I have not encountered heating up issues with Morphy Richards. As a matter of fact, any OTG that you use, the body will heat up.

Let me know if you need more assistance.
      Cheers!
      Sonia
